Real quick before I go on my little spiel here:
  1. This is spoiler stuff for My Little Pony G5. If you don't want to spoil yourself over possible changes to the series, I understand. Please ignore this if you don't want to see it.
  2. I'm not racist. I need to say this upfront because there are many, many, many people that want to raise a ruckus over skin color. I'm not against the casting choices that Meghan McCarthy and her team makes.
Still with me and not racing down to make a comment as fast as possible? Ok.

These are a couple emails that were leaked to 4chan after someone hacked their accounts. Hasbro seriously needs to work on their online security measures.

I want you to pay attention to this, because this is the workings of the death of a character. I see this lazy, forced diversity crap way, way too often as of late in American media. Companies like Marvel, DC, Hasbro, and more are too scared to be labeled by the minority of America's population that virtue signal (and in some extreme cases, riot) as bigots, racists, sexists, Nazis, your buzzword here. So, what do they do? The do the laziest damn thing in terms of creativity and story telling: they take a pre-existing character, and change the hell out of it to be more inclusive.

I'm not offended that Hasbro wants to make an urban pony that comes from the bad side of town. Far from it. I think that's a wonderful idea and having someone like Tiffany Haddish voice her is a lot of fun.

I'm offended because an already well established character has to die for the sake of social justice. Applejack, it's your turn for the noose.

Applejack in G4 is already a great character. She values family ties, hard work, honesty, and helping those that need it without a second thought. She's honestly my favorite of the 6, and her ideals reflect on mine as a Christian: Love thy neighbor as you love yourself. Unfortunately, some of the staff behind the show is dedicated to make her less "hick-ish" and sprinkle some forced diversity in the mix. They want to rewrite her as someone completely different a good one year after G4's finale, while our memory of her is still fresh in our minds. I know that the show's team is very creative.  They've driven the fanbase to, time and again, inspire people to create characters and stories of their own in their universe. So, you can imagine how extremely lazy they are to take the main six and start from square one with new voices and personalities.

If they took the premise of an urban pony and made it into a new, distinguishable character, I would be behind their creative drive 100%. As it stands, they are taking the lazy route and killing a character to fill an invisible quota. As an amateur game designer, that is more offensive to me than any of the trigger warnings SJWs flap their jaws about.

R.I.P. G4 Applejack.

Wait, not only are they changing her design drastically, but they're making her urban with a black girl's voice!? What in the actual hell!?
I mean, there's no problem having a character like that. And there's no problem with a character having a black girl's voice, either.
The problem is that she's supposed to be Applejack! She's basically a different character! Not even a different representation, it's just a different character entirely. So why not Make her a different character? Why give her the name Applejack? I now have a bad feeling about this G5...

We all do. I really can't explain why they can't just make a new batch of characters instead of rehashing new ones.

The genie can't go back into the bottle, guys!

Very much agreed. Applejack is one of my top two characters! (tied with Rarity, unicorn Twilight being third and so-forth) If they're going to go through the trouble of making a new generation, which I understand from a marketing perspective, I think it would be in their best economic favor to make completely new characters, (or reuse all the old ones I suppose), than to single out one in particular as an insulting testimony to their following suit with the political correctness crowd.

Another problem is, unless they have some good writing and fix their workflow to sell toys through the merit of their characters rather than rewriting the characters to fit their toys, they could end up with a generation comparable to one of their past generations. ... Not necessarily bad if that's what they're aiming for I guess, but I doubt they'd have the same outreach or ROI. ^^

Or the sex card... Or the gender card... Or the religion card (except Christian or Judism)... Or the ableist card... Or the weight card... or the Class card...

With all these cards being thrown around, it's no wonder these people aren't playing with a full deck.

Agreed, they fail to understand that we're all human beings, so why should certain groups be raised up on a pedestal while others are lowered?

Simple. It's because, once upon a time, those types of groups were abused. However, nowadays, in the guise of equality, groups are trying to raise their pedestal higher for revenge for what happened in the past. Folks like you and me want an egalitarian society where people are judged based on their character and start over. But, there will never be true equality if people keep bringing up the past to gain special favor.

Ain't that the truth? My real question is where exactly this mentality started, since I feel society has gone backwards from the progression that was made in the 90's and early 2000's in which nobody cared whether someone was female or ethnic, just that they were a human being in general.

Boy, you want to talk about going backwards? We're going right back to segregation in college, except it's Africans separating FROM Caucasians.

When you really think about it, safe spaces are also a form of segregation, huh?

XD I see what you did there. Seriously though, when will entertainment companies learn that Social Justice doesn’t sell? Just ask Marvel. Now Hasbro is making the same mistake. It can’t end well.

You know, I'm surprised FiM has lasted this long, as most animated shows (toy-driven ones especially) don't last longer than 3 to 4 seasons. What I find off-putting is that the reboot is coming so soon, like only a year after the previous incarnation ends. If they wait 4-5 years it would be a bit less jarring.

Either way, I like the Applejack we already have, even with the jokes people make about her being a flat character and such.

Many people do. That's why the backlash of the new change is going to hurt the creative team more than they realize. They are walking on eggshells with thumbtacks in their shoes and an infected big toe.

Well if I remember right, the first episode of FiM was released just mere months after the release of the infamous Newborn Cooties. This, on the other hand, needs to be delayed at least a year or two, though so far, it only seems to be in the planning stages.

Even then, we don't know if the movie they're talking about is going to be theatrical, made for television, or direct-to-DVD, because regardless of which one they go with is a big gamble for the franchise as a whole.

I think we all, parents and cartoon-enthusiasts alike, can agree that G3.5 had very little to lose in terms of brand. It was Faust and her team that made something out of nothing. That's why it made sense to start as soon as she did. Here, however, is a matter of being too soon.

Well let's be honest, G3.5 was a failed attempt at trying to update the franchise, and it did so by basically making the franchise FAR more "girly" than it was already and made it so painfully pandering, especially given how conservative Hasbro was with the franchise at the time.

First off, they downsized it to just 7 characters and ONLY those 7, referred to officially as the "Core 7" Ponies, which were Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash (who always dresses in style), Cheerilee, Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, Star Song and Toola Roola. The latter two which have no G4 counterparts as far as I know (but fans have made their own). While the theme song explained their "personalities", they were all pretty interchangable with each other. On the upside though, one could consider the Core 7 to be a prototype for the Mane 6 in G4.

Also, while a lot of bronies hate G3, they ESPECIALLY hated G3.5, and it wasn't just bronies, as even toy collectors saw a disdain for G3.5, which was the likely reason it was short-lived, combined with how pandering and degrading it was in comparison to what came before, let alone what we have now...

Well I never watched the most recent season since I lost interest in MLP around season 6 and wanted to move onto other things. At that time I jumped ship to Steven Universe, but then left that train when I saw what that fandom had ultimately become.

I stopped watching around season 3 due to schedule difficulties, watched E.100,
being someone who doesn't really subscribe to most popular fanon I found it about as entertaining as a wet matchstick.

The sad part is, it's not just MLP. Like a said, lots of media companies are doing it lately to fill some sort of quota. That's part of why Hollywood is tanking. People are too afraid to be creative in the risk of offending someone.

Eh. I feel it's less 'forced diversity' and more making a character that they're capable of giving justice to. Most recent episodes turn her into a supreme child who can't handle different opinions at worst, or the straight-man who speaks up once every 10 minutes at best. This is mostly episodes when she's interacting with the rest of the Mane 6, at least. She's usually at her best in family episodes, which again sucks, because that's why most people give her flak.

I've seen the leaks, and I'll admit I was really, really bummed out when reading that they might turn her into a city-girl, but I'm willing to accept that if it means she won't go from 'Honest, pragmatic farm girl who is exactly where she wants to be in life' to 'weeeeew doggie that hat surely is ugly lemme stomp on it and then yell about strawberries'.

She's my favorite pony, and it sucks to see her go since I love everything she's about, but it's preferable to seeing her turned into a more child friendly redneck stereotype.

I'm glad that you see it more as a design change for more dynamic writing. I can certainly see why changing her into a city girl would be a blessing in disguise. However, I honestly don't see the appeal, at all, for taking a character and wiping everything away for a more diverse clean slate. They are more than capable of making their own characters to grow attached to instead of using brand recognition to sell the same character twice. That's really my main gripe.

Totally with you.  Between Rarity and RD, you'd think a lot of the urban audience would find someone to identify with.  But is AJ just going to go the way of Tim Allen--caught on the wrong side of historical revision to imagine a world without traditional values?

And I don't even have a lot of traditional values ingrained in me or anything.  My mom raised me to think for myself, and so I've decided what I like and what I don't based on personal taste and meditation.  It's turned me into...a non-typical MLP fan, for sure.

You're not alone, maestro.  Keep up the good work, and let me know any way I can help.

I don't see the appeal myself. However as often as AJ is gutted and made into the 'mare who can't handle things and needs to have basic concepts such as opinions explained to her', there's a possibility she is just a bit much for them to write around. As she stands, they probably just don't see her as as good a character as you and I do. I can take a good guess and say that the rest of the Mane 6 will probably stay the same, personality wise, at least.

What I'm saying is, AJ is probably being changed around, because she's too... normal. She can't ever really come off as in the wrong unless she's written like a bumbling hick, which is horribly ooc. In a world where everything is wacky, bright and wonderful, she's seen as far too boring compared to the rest of her friends. I love having her as the honest, well-meaning straight-man who can sometimes end up telling too much truth, but not everyone can really agree with me.
